Avoidance of infection is still the only effective means of protection against HIV
disease. Awareness of the risk of infection and observance of protective measures are therefore
of the
utmost importance. Among the greatest challenges in relation to HIV prevention
is the need for effective educational campaigns and humanitarian assistance in developing countries. Great
hope is currently being placed in a newly developed HIV vaccine.
This vaccine contains HIV genes and
stimulates both cellular resistance and antibody response to the virus. Tests are being conducted to
determine whether it is suitable for use in humans. |
