Influenza viruses are transmitted from person to person within droplets
shed during coughing or sneezing. After being inhaled into our airways,
the viruses penetrate and replicate within healthy cells of our
body, killing them. Extremely rapid proliferation of the virus results
in the affected person developing the symptoms of influenza.
Who is at particular risk?
- Elderly people (over 65 years of age)
- Individuals whose immune system
is compromised, e.g. by HIV
- Young children
- Patients suffering
from chronic illnesses, e.g. chronic respiratory,
cardiac or renal disease
