Neuraminidase
inhibitors are receptor-targeting enzymes that block specific
processes that the virus requires in order to replicate. In this
way, the rapid proliferation of the virus is stopped.
Influenza is generally treated with over-the-counter (OTC)
medications. These relieve the symptoms, but do not target the virus, the cause of the illness.
Antibiotics
are frequently prescribed, but they are ineffective against influenza,
as they act only against bacteria, not viruses. |
