How can hepatitis C be prevented?

Precautions:

  • Do not share needles or other instruments used for administering drugs or for piercing or tattooing.
  • Do not share any sharp instruments such as razor blades, nail clippers or scissors.
  • Do not share your tooth brush.
  • Practice safer sex, e.g. if you are single and/or homosexual and during menstruation.
  • If you have any symptoms of the disease, do not hesitate to speak with your doctor.
  • Have your blood checked regularly or if you develop any symptoms related to this disease.

At present there is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C infection, and scientists see little chance of developing one in the near future because HCV mutates at a very fast rate. Because HCV mutates at a very fast rate, scientists find it difficult to establish stable cultures of the virus in which to develop a vaccine. Development of an HCV vaccine is rendered even more difficult by the fact that more than six strains of HCV exist.
Nevertheless, transmission of hepatitis C, like that of other blood-borne diseases, can be avoided by taking proper precautions.
