Are genes responsible for type 2 diabetes?

Diseases such as type 2 diabetes are controlled by a large number of genes, each harbouring a variant that confers a modest increase in risk.
These variants interact with one another and with the environment in complex ways. This makes it extremely difficult to determine the contribution of each altered gene to the disease.
Nevertheless, ongoing research identifies that such variants will increase our understanding of the disease.
