How can type 2 diabetes be prevented?

Susceptible individuals can avoid diabetes by:
  • Appropriate diet: low-fat / high-fibre / low-calorie
  • Weight reduction when necessary, preferably supported by a weight management programme
  • Increased physical activity
  • Occasional testing of blood glucose level, especially for people at high risk such as:
          - People who are overweight
          - People with poor diet and lack of exercise
          - People above the age of 45
          - People with a family history of diabetes
          - Elderly people
          - People taking certain medications, e.g. steroids
