Overweight and obesity
are different degrees of a condition in which there is excess accumulation of body fat sufficient to
endanger health. Obesity can be measured by various means, including the body
mass index (BMI). Healthy individuals have a BMI of between 18.5 and 25. Being
overweight means having a BMI of 25–30. Obese individuals (i.e. individuals with a BMI
above 30) have an especially high risk of developing health problems, and this risk increases dramatically
with increasing BMI.
