Are genes responsible for overweight?

Overall, it appears that genes contribute 25–40% to obesity.
Obesity genes may exert their effects by altering the body's energy expenditure, appetite or the way the body deals with nutrients.
Recently, a number of gene defects have been linked to obesity. These include mutations in the leptin gene, the melanocortin-4 receptor, cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme and PPAR gamma, a transcription factor.
