Since
chronic renal failure often results from long-standing diabetes or hypertension, at-risk patients can
take the following preventive measures:
Control weight
Exercise
adequately
Have regular blood tests by general practitioner
Reduce
or refrain from smoking
Eat a balanced diet. Ensure an adequate iron intake (15 mg/day).
Good sources of iron are meat, milk, cheese, liver, eggs, fruit and cereals. Vegans obtain their daily
dose of iron from lentils, beans, tofu or chickpeas.
