How can anaemia be prevented?

Since chronic renal failure often results from long-standing diabetes or hypertension, at-risk patients can take the following preventive measures:

  • Control weight
  • Exercise adequately
  • Have regular blood tests by general practitioner
  • Reduce or refrain from smoking
  • Eat a balanced diet. Ensure an adequate iron intake (15 mg/day). Good sources of iron are meat, milk, cheese, liver, eggs, fruit and cereals. Vegans obtain their daily dose of iron from lentils, beans, tofu or chickpeas.
  • Reduce salt intake
