How can hepatitis C be treated?

Ribavirin is a nucleoside analogue of guanosine that has antiviral activity against a variety of DNA and RNA viruses including hepatitis C. In addition, ribavirin modifies the immune response and enhances the antiviral activity of interferon. When used as monotherapy, ribavirin has no beneficial effects; it is effective only in combination with interferon. With this combination, sustained virological responses (clearance of the virus) are now obtained in more than 50% of patients.
